Komen® (MSM) will be holding the 2nd Annual Race for the Cure Mississippi Gulf Coast event on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 8:00 a.m. at Jones Park in Gulfport. Race for the Cure is the largest series of 5K run/fitness walks in the world. The morning will include a survivor breakfast, Race village area and a 5K with an optional timed component. There will also be a best “Pinked Up” person contest.
MSM held their first Gulf Coast event in 2013 with Paint the Park Pink. The event grew and has been replaced by Race for the Cure. “We are looking forward to our second annual Race for the Cure Mississippi Gulf Coast,” said Catherine Young, Executive Director of MSM. “This event allows us to raise more funds to serve the underinsured and uninsured men and women on the Gulf Coast. 75 percent of our nets funds raised stay in Mississippi for breast health services. The money is allocated back into the community through a grant process.”
The affiliate was formed in 1999 as an all-volunteer organization. To date, it has invested over $2.85 million in community breast health programs in 59 counties throughout the state. Race for the Cure is the affiliate’s largest event and enables it to give back to the community and help in the fight to end breast cancer. 75 percent of the net income raised from Komen events stays in Mississippi to fund breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects to uninsured and under-insured men and women. A minimum of 25 percent of net income from events supports the Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Programs, which fund groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world. Komen funds have been a part of every breast cancer advance made through scientific research.
